Boundary Crossings Public Opening

Join Pacific Northwest College of Art’s Intermedia Department for the opening of this innovative summer program, featuring an exhibition of animated installation work by Jessica Mein, Daniela Repas (with Todd Tawd and Thornton C. Wilson), and Marina Zurkow.

Prof. Dr. Suzanne Buchan, Director of the Animation Research Centre at the University for the Creative Arts UK, curator, and founding editor of “Animation: An Interdisciplinary Journal,” examines spatial politics and artefact in relation to animation.

As part of Boundary Crossings, Author Paul Wells delivered the lecture “Re-Imagining Animation” on July 17 at Pacific Northwest College of Art’s Swigert Commons.


Screening: An Evening with Paul Vester

A pioneer in the field of animation, Paul Vester centers his work on the language of animation. Co-director of the Experimental Animation program at California Institute of the Arts, Vester was the recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship in 2003. His films include “Abductees (1995), “Picnic” (1987), “Sunbeam” (1980) and “In the Woods” (2008).


Beyond the Box

A panel discussion held in conjunction with Boundary Crossings: An Institute in Contemporary Animated Arts. Moderated by Irene Kotlarz, founding director of Platform International Animation Festival, featuring animation artists from a range of disciplines.

Prolific Author Paul Wells, Director of the Animation Academy in the School of Art & Design at Loughborough University, discusses the changing face of animation and new media. Wells is the author of a range of animation books including: “Re-Imagining Animation,” “Understanding Animation,” “Animation – Genre and Authorship (Short Cuts)” and “Basics Animation: Scriptwriting.” Co-sponsored by ASIFA-NW.

Join us for the Portland premiere of “Sita Sings the Blues, “ the first feature by independent animation artist and 2006 Guggenheim Fellow Nina Paley. “The Greatest Break-Up Story Ever Told,” the film retells the classic Indian myth the Ramayana. Dubbed “America’s best-loved unknown cartoonist,” Paley is an independent artist committed to sharing her work through the Creative Commons.
