Students in PNCA's unique dual MFA/MA program can complete both an MA in Critical Studies and one of the four full-time MFA programs offered by the college in just three years. Thus students admitted to the MFA in Visual Studies, MFA in Print Media, MFA in Collaborative Design, or the MFA in Applied Craft + Design may also apply to be admitted to the MA in Critical Studies concurrently.

This path offers a deepened focus on critical writing to help students in visual art and design further articulate and contextualize their work in a larger theoretical framework. It provides additional time and support for the written thesis and an emphasis on publishable research with opportunity to publish in the MA program’s online and print journals.

Students interested in teaching in higher education will have all the advantages of a terminal MFA degree combined with the academic rigor of the MA program. And all students graduate with real world skills to be competitive in a variety of fields thanks to the MA in Critical Studies professional practice coursework and required internship. Finally, students can leverage elective credits, applying them to both MFA and MA programs.
