Pacific Northwest College of Art presents “BEAUTIES,” featuring new drawings by PNCA Faculty Emeritus Robert Hanson in the Feldman Gallery and “Molly Dilworth: Dispersion” featuring new work by New-York-based artist and PNCA Artist-In- Residence Molly Dilworth in the Project Space.
Hanson’s recent drawings are part of his long-term and ongoing fascination with the human head. The artist alternates between drawing one of three favorite models. Using a restrictive timeframe, Hanson employs a variety of lines, marks, and bits of subjective color to reinvent what he is seeing. “At best the resulting drawing is not a portrait likeness but, if successful, a surprising variation on the original,” said Hanson. A long-time Professor of Painting and Drawing at PNCA, Hanson has remained a working artist in the Pacific Northwest since the early ’70s.
Artweek called Hanson “a respected painter of uncompromising abstractions.” Former Oregonian Art Critic Randy Gragg described Hanson as “… a combination of monk and hedonist, working in a world of intellectual richness and pure visual pleasure.” A catalog of Hanson’s work will be published in February 2009.
“Molly Dilworth: Dispersion” is inspired in part by writer and shaman Carlos Castaneda’s The Teachings of Don Juan:
“Go first to your old plant and watch carefully the watercourse made by the rain. By now the rain must have carried the seeds far away. Watch the crevices made by the runoff, and from them determine the direction of the flow. Then find the plant that is growing at the farthest point from your plant. All the devil’s weed plants that are growing in between are yours.”
Dilworth’s work is a set of experiments-organized into systematic structures-examining how this virtual world, and her brain in it, works. An artist and curator who lives and works in Brooklyn, Dilworth paints “nowhere, limbo, the in-between spaces we’re all getting comfortable with,” she says.
In 2008, Dilworth exhibited and performed as part of SUDDENLY: WHERE WE LIVE NOW, a multi-faceted work that started in Portland, Ore. Dilworth collaborated with PNCA’s MK Guth on “Ties of Protection and Safekeeping” (2008 Whitney Biennial) and “Red Shoe Delivery Service” (Australia, England, USA). In June 2008, Reed College’s Cooley Gallery Curator Stephanie Snyder featured Dilworth’s work in an Art Lies Magazine piece.
