Justine Kurland Lecture

May 7
Rm 125  12:30pm

Justine Kurland first gained public notice for her work in the well-noted 1999 group show entitled, Another Girl, Another Planet, whose curators included photographer Gregory Crewdson. The show marked the arrival of the so-called “girl photographers,” many of whom, including Kurland, studied under Crewdson in Yale’s MFA program.

In the show, which was catalogued by Lawrence Rubin Greenberg/Van Doren Fine Art in 2001, Kurland displayed her large c-print staged tableau pictures of neo-romantic landscapes inhabited by adolescent girls. The New York Times remarked on the work, “Ms. Kurland’s girls never appeared passive, or even seductive; instead she put them in nature and assigned them active roles: climbing trees, paddling in swimming holes, carrying a slaughtered deer through the woods. She describes the series as a Huckleberry Finn narrative, but giving it to girls.” Since that time Kurland has continued to explore the subject of female identity, scouting locations and recruiting subjects on roadtrips that span from New York to the Pacific Northwest.

Kurland is represented by Mitchell-Innes & Nash in New York.
