Monica Drake Short-listed for Hoffer Award

It was announced on April 8 that PNCA Faculty member Monica Drake’s debut novel, Clown Girl, published by Hawthorne Books, is on the short-list for this year’s Hoffer Award.

Drake’s debut has already received plentiful praise from both critics and readers. In a 2007 review, Willamette Week dubbed Drake, “Portland-penned and Chuck Palahniuk-approved.” Pahlaniuk, who wrote the introduction for the book, said simply, “Clown Girl is its own reality.”

Drake, who has an MFA from the University of Arizona, is a contributor of reviews and articles to The Oregonian, The Stranger, and the Portland Mercury. Her fiction has appeared in the Beloit Fiction Review, The Threepenny Review and The Insomniac Reader.

The Hoffer award honors the memory of American philosopher Eric Hoffer, and was established to foster writing of significant merit. Winning works are awarded prizes and published annually in the anthology, Best New Writing. Award winners will be announced later this Spring.
