Photographs Record Remnants

John Calvelli, Associate Professor in PNCA’s Communication Design department, is currently showing photographs in the Alexander Gallery at Clackamas Community College.

The Oregonian says, “John Calvelli is the prototype of the kind of Portland transplant that has enriched and deepened the local cultural scene in the past decade.”

Calvelli’s artist statement for the exhibit reads,

“Photographs are of the past; they represent what is left behind. They are remnants. What allows us to photograph is a consequence of the world’s passing. What is left behind—the remnant—is evidence of the world which once was. This is the only world one can photograph.

Taken as a whole, these remnants are not only a consequence of the world passing, but they are as well our world—the one which acts upon us, and the one within which we act. As such, these remnants are the beginning of our future, and the cause of our future world’s passing.

The individual photographs represent encounters with remnants of the passing world. The installation means to configure this world’s passing as a significant event.”

You can view Remnants at the Alexander Gallery through April 25. The gallery is open to the public Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm.
