Exhibition | M5

Curated by Jeff Jahn

August 1-22
Philip Feldman Gallery
PNCA Main Campus Building
1241 NW Johnson St.
Opening Reception: August 5, 6 pm

M5 explores the intersections and mutual interests of five artists who have exhibited at Brooklyn’s Minus Space; Don Voisine, Patricia Zarate, Steve Karlik, Nancy White and Rossanna Martinez, combined with two of the Northwest’s most historically relevant abstract practitioners Francis Celentano and Mel Katz.

Reductive art is generally characterized by its use of plainspoken materials, monochromatic or limited color, geometry and pattern, repetition and seriality, precise craftsmanship and intellectual rigor. It is inclusive and pluralistic in its approach, including geographic location, age, gender, medium, artistic strategy and content of work.

Ticket info: Free and open to the public.

Exhibition Discussion | The Essentials

in conjunction with the M5 Exhibition

August 18, 6:30 pm
PNCA Main Campus Building, Room 201
1241 NW Johnson St.

The M5 exhibition sets the stage for The Essentials—a study of what ideas are crucial to the active abstract and perceptual art community in Portland.

The Essentials is a JPEG jam, asking a number of reductive, abstract and perceptual artists in Portland to choose and present 3 essential images of their own work, while listing what three ideas or concerns accompany them. The visual discussion serves as an anatomy of the critical thinking around this type of art in Portland and a way to bring like minded artists into discussion with one another.

Throughout the evening a list of relevant terms and cogent concerns will be compiled to spur discussion after the presentations.

Participating artists: Calvin Ross Carl, Zach Davis, Arcy Douglass, Laura Fritz, Damien Gilley, Jesse Hayward, Laura Hughes, Steve Karlik (from Minus Space), Eva Lake, Victor Maldonado, TJ Norris, Josh Pavlacky, Josh Smith, Paul Sutinen, Gary Wiseman and more.

Ticket info: Free and open to the public.

Get your craft on summer camp style with vintage-inspired merit badges! Torie Nguyen and Cathy Pitters from Crafty Wonderland will lead a workshop guiding you through the steps to make embroidered patches that will bring you back to your days at scout camp.

The project involves taking fabric circles and embellishing them with simple embroidered images depicting your favorite activities—think camping, biking, sewing, etc. Fabric pens will also be on hand for those who don’t feel handy with a needle and thread.

Come join us for some old school fun! Make something, meet new people and help craft a community in a positive, creative environment.
