Two new installations by Nathaniel Shapiro

In the Manuel Izquierdo Sculpture Gallery: The Way of Progress, a meditation on the creation of self-imposed barriers to fulfillment. Through a scenario that replaces key structural elements in common objects, designed for human support and interaction, with fluorescent light bulbs, the viewer is invited to contemplate the correlation of fear and growth. In the PNCA Main Building, second floor: Unlimited Minutes, Free Text and Picture Messaging*, an interactive installation spanning the length of PNCA’s Swigert Commons. Consisting of a cumbersome, stationary analog of the ubiquitous features of wireless communication, complete with a tin can telephone and hand-cranked message delivery system, the piece addresses the paradoxes inherent in the evolving landscape of communication technology, and their implications for human interaction.

James Turrell

PNCA+FIVE Idea Studios

Possibly the foremost artist working in light and space today, James Turrell is an internationally acclaimed light and space artist whose work can be found in collections worldwide. Turrell is closely identified with Roden Crater, begun in 1972 in which he works within an extinct volcano’s crater using natural changing light and celestial events to make a statement about man’s place in the universe. His work has been recognized in exhibitions in major museums around the world, including the Guggenheim Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Panza di Biumo Collection, Varese, Italy. The lecture is the first in a series of Idea Studios programs, generating from the College’s innovative Ford Institute of Visual Education (FIVE). Untraceable

Untraceable is an exhibition of artists’ responses to political control, violence and torture. The exhibition is curated by Cooley Gallery director Stephanie Snyder, and is inspired by the work of Reed College political science professor Darius Rejali, an internationally recognized expert on modern torture and the author of Torture and Democracy (Princeton, 2007). Untraceable explores the invisible and covert forms of violence that have come to characterize both modern torture and political oppression. The exhibition includes painting, photography, sculpture and new media.

The group exhibition is curated by Stephanie Snyder, Curator, Douglas
F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery, Reed College, with contributions by
Stuart Horodner, Curator, Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, Atlanta,

Jacques Rancière: What Makes Images Unacceptable

PNCA+FIVE Idea Studios

One of the most stimulating thinkers of our time, Jacques Rancière possesses a restless intelligence. The French philosopher has written over 20 books since the mid ’70s — including Reading Capital (1968) with Louis Althusser — and has lectured widely at universities and more recently, at art events including the Frieze Art Fair and the Moscow Biennale. The lecture is part of a series of Idea Studios programs, generating from the College’s innovative Ford Institute of Visual Education (FIVE). Idea Studios engages leading thinkers and artists from a range of fields and practices to enrich the mix of ideas within the College and its broader community by introducing new elements, questions, possibilities and challenges to the prevailing curriculum.
