Two new installations by Nathaniel Shapiro
In the Manuel Izquierdo Sculpture Gallery: The Way of Progress, a meditation on the creation of self-imposed barriers to fulfillment. Through a scenario that replaces key structural elements in common objects, designed for human support and interaction, with fluorescent light bulbs, the viewer is invited to contemplate the correlation of fear and growth. In the PNCA Main Building, second floor: Unlimited Minutes, Free Text and Picture Messaging*, an interactive installation spanning the length of PNCA’s Swigert Commons. Consisting of a cumbersome, stationary analog of the ubiquitous features of wireless communication, complete with a tin can telephone and hand-cranked message delivery system, the piece addresses the paradoxes inherent in the evolving landscape of communication technology, and their implications for human interaction.
