Weaving Ribbons Into a Braid
It is my story when I tell it; it is your story when you tell it.
During November and December I have an exhibition at the Linfield College Gallery in McMinnville Oregon. The Exhibition is titled ” Our Rapunzel.” “Our Rapunzel” is an interactive project with the Linfield community or anyone who wishes to join in. Each Wednesday and Friday through November 30th I am in the gallery working on a large braid sculpture. The braid grows and changes configuration with the participation of the community. A participant can write a desire, wish or regret on a ribbon. The ribbon is woven into the braid creating a new branch. On certain days performances take place, which lead to temporary sculptures.

Lunch in the Linfield Gallery
On Wednesdays I have lunch in the gallery. Some people work on the braid, others talk about the project or things they are working on. Some people do related projects like the woman in the photo weaving flowers into braids she is creating. Each lunchtime is a little different; there are new people and new conversations. Next Lunch November 29th.

Wednesday November 8th a group of students and I engaged in a performance work that manifested in a temporary sculpture. Three women with the assistance of other students braided themselves together in a large extended braid. The performance resulted in a temporary sculpture, which they moved around to multiple locations on the campus.
Each location allowed them to manifest their sculpture in a different way directly connecting them to the immediate environment at hand. They remained tied together until about 5:00 in the afternoon. I assumed they would be relieved to be separated, however this was not exactly the case. They had adapted to moving together in space. The issue of separation was something they needed to do alone and as a result separated themselves from the viewers and other participants untying themselves in a ritualistic fashion.

living with an extra 10 pounds of hair
Mana Watanabe, one of the students who participated in the temporary hair sculptures kept her hair extension for a week. During this time she kept a diary on her days as a temporary Rapunzel. These photos where taken a week after the initial performance.

last day at linfield
Ok so it has been a while since I last added to the blog. Now it is the night before I leave for Brazil to once again do a braid project and my thoughts return to my time at Linfield. The last day at the gallery was in many ways the most risky for me personally. Laura, Mana, and Roxanne spent the morning braiding and extending my hair. When they were done we went to the field behind the gallery.
Here the three along with Tim Ward another Linfield student constructed possible scenarios for my new character. The weather was wet and cold. The braids added another 25 lbs to my hair which eventually gave me a head ache. This part of the Linfield project has profoundly effected the way I am now considering approaching the piece in Rio at A Gentil Carioca. The show in Rio opens on January 13th. I will be creating my project in the gallery during work business hours. Look for the results on the Brazil Blog.
