Ford Institute for Visual Education (FIVE)

In 2007, a $15 million gift from the late Hallie Ford to Pacific Northwest College of Art established the Ford Institute for Visual Education (FIVE) and advanced the College as an innovative center of excellence. This contribution represents the largest gift ever made to an arts organization in Oregon and serves as a catalyst for expanding the College’s graduate programs and offerings to the community through the vibrant FIVE Idea Studios and Graduate Visiting Artist Lecture Series, in addition to a broad range of exhibitions, institutes and symposiums.

Through FIVE, the College has brought world-renowned speakers and artists to Portland, including Lewis Hyde, Jacques Rancière, Martin Kersels and James Turrell, while also sustaining its world-class artist-in-residence program with current writer-in-residence, Pulitzer Prize-nominated author Barry Sanders. FIVE facilitated the launch of the College’s five graduate education programs: MFA in Applied Craft and Design operated jointly with Oregon College of Art and Craft, MFA in Collaborative Design, MFA in Visual Studies, Low-Residency MFA in Visual Studies, and MA in Critical Theory and Creative Research.
